Jane-Marie Schaeffer is a caring, compassionate lawyer who enjoys assisting clients find creative solutions to the estate planning and elder law situations that confront them. Her diverse practice experiences range from representing clients in contested guardianship proceedings to assisting physicians set up asset protection trusts to helping wealthy individuals establish private foundations. Her practice areas include Estate Planning, Asset Protection, Charitable Giving, Tax Planning, LGTB/ Non-Traditional Family Planning, Elder Law, Long Term Care, Medicaid, Supplemental Needs Trusts and Guardianships.
Ms. Schaeffer worked in New York City at a tax and estate planning law firm for several years before relocating to the Berkshires in Massachusetts. Her New York City practice included international tax planning and estate tax planning. She then worked at a large Capital Region Certified Public Accounting firm as a tax attorney for several years before joining the Pierro Law Group, LLC. She has an extensive background in preparing and reviewing estate tax and individual and fiduciary income tax returns. After joining Pierro Law Group, LLC she expanded her practice areas to encompass elder law planning, guardianship and Medicaid planning. Ms. Schaeffer is licensed to practice law in both New York and Massachusetts. She is well versed in same gender and other non-traditional family planning strategies.
Being married to a physician, Ms. Schaeffer has developed a strong interest in the interplay between the fields of law and medicine, which can range from dealing with complex end of life decision making to handling estate plans for physicians and their families. She is a member of the Elder Law Section of the New York State Bar Association, and the Capital District Women's Bar Association. She has presented on Elder Law topics to community groups such as Catholic Charities, the NYS Employee Assistance Program, the Woman’s Club of Albany, and Senior Law Day at Albany Law School. She also has spoken at seminars for financial advisers and insurance professionals on estate planning and tax topics. Ms. Schaeffer is a graduate of St. John's University School of Law and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from New York University. She was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1994 and the Massachusetts State Bar in 2000.
